| Description | Also known as the 'Old Patent' or 'Connecticuts First Charter,' this is a deed of conveyance for that part of New England that extends from the "Narraghensett River... to the South Sea" and was used, in 1635, to justify the establishment of a colony and the erection of a fort at Saybrook, Conn., a claim to lands in Matianuck (later Windsor, Conn.), and the establishment of John Wintrhop, Jr. as the "governor of the river Connecticut." Three handwritten copies of the Patent exist in the Connecticut State Library, State Archives, but the location of the original document, thought to have been written on March 19, 1631/2, is unknown. |
