During
World
War
II
these
buildings
were a
part
of the
Electric
Boat
Shipyard
across
the
river
in
Groton
. They were
constructed
as
part
of a
program
to
increase
submarine
production
.
Both
were
meant
to be
temporary
and were
declared
surplus
after
the
war
. In
1946
they were
given
to
Mitchell
,
which
was then
New
London
Junior
College
.
After
being
dismantled
, they were
moved
by
truck
to the
campus
.
Clarke
Hall
served
as a
cafeteria
and
sometimes
as an
auditorium...[and]
was
used
until
1964
when
it
was
replaced
by
Clarke
Center
. The
Business
Administration
Building
housed
three
offices
,
three
class
rooms
,
locker
rooms
and a
small-sized
gym...[and]
is
no
longer
used
.
Clarke
Hall
is
used
for
general
storage...[and]
provides
a
place
for the
maintenance
crew
to
work
on the
college
fleet
of
boats.
