Title
Arrowheads
Subject - LCSH
Weston
(Conn.)
:
Life-Family/Social
;
Weston
(Conn.)
:
1750-1799
Description
Over
the
years
,
hundreds
of
arrowheads
have been
found
in the
Lucius
Pond
Ordway/Devil's
Den
Preserve
,
evidence
of the
Native
American
population
that
inhabited
Weston
prior
to the
incorporation
of the
town
.
Arrowheads
were
used
as a
projectile
weapon
or
tool
and
made
from
varieties
of
stone
such
as
obsidian
and
flint
.
When
Roger
Ludlow
first
arrived
in
Fairfield
in
1639
, the
local
population
of
Native
Americans
, in what
is
now
Weston
and
Easton
,
probably
numbered
no
more
than a
few
dozen
. At the
beginning
of the
17th
century
, the
population
totaled
several
thousand
but
after
a
devastating
plague
in
1616
,
many
of those
who
survived
moved
to the
coast
. By the
time
the
settlers
moved
to
Weston
most
of the
Native
Americans
had
left
the
area
.
