Description	Cowles, James, Lt., 1723-1789. James was the son of Capt. Isaac Cowles and his third wife Elizabeth Smith. He was appointed Lt. in the 1st Co. Train Band of 15th CT. Militia. His first wife was Abigail Hooker, second wife Mary Bull. James Cowles’ gravestone exhibits a design that incorporates earlier motifs, the cherub/death’s head with wings etc., but in the tympanum takes on a more elaborate, baroque quality, with curves, circles, waves and other decorative elements. In contrast, the body of the stone is a plain rectangle, neatly lettered and surrounded by a simple border. Below the epitaph appears the inscription “On what a moment of time hangs everlasting things.” This stone is cited in Ludwig as an “orb-enclosed crowned effigy” that symbolizes the soul’s flight to heaven and the soul in paradise. The lines radiating from the crown are the rays of the sun, and the orb is the emblem of the Sphere of Grace.
