wife
Mary
Bull
.
James
Cowles’
gravestone
exhibits
a
design
that
incorporates
earlier
motifs
, the
cherub/death’s
head
with
wings
etc.
, but in the
tympanum
takes
on a
more
elaborate
,
baroque
quality
, with
curves
,
circles
,
waves
and
other
decorative
elements
. In
contrast
, the
body
of the
stone
is
a
plain
rectangle
,
neatly
lettered
and
surrounded
by a
simple
border
.
Below
the
epitaph
appears
the
inscription
“On
what a
moment
of
time
hangs
everlasting
things.”
This
stone
is
cited
in
Ludwig
as an
“orb-enclosed
crowned
effigy”
that
symbolizes
the
soul’s
flight
to
heaven
and the
soul
in
paradise
. The
lines
radiating
from the
crown
are the
rays
of the
sun
, and the
orb
is
the
emblem
of the
Sphere
of
Grace
.
