Subject - LCSH	Homes -- Newington
Description	Built by Martin Kellogg (7/24/1781-11/23/1868) in 1808 (married September 26, 1808) for his bride Mary Welles (2/13/1789- 4/4/1865). Martin Kellogg, son of Martin and Hannah Robbins Kellogg, received his commission as Colonel in the 1st Regiment Connecticut Militia during the War of 1812. He served as Major General of the 1st Division Connecticut State Militia from 1820 to 1824 and thereafter was known as General Kellogg. The house is a typical New England two story Georgian style (45' x 30') with full attic and basement. It has some Greek Revival influences, a center entrance with an open pediment portico and Doric columns framing a leaded glass fanlight. A Palladian window is centered on the second story. Two inside chimneys serve the first floor parlors, adjoining rooms and one second floor chamber. A large cooking fireplace and oven are in the original kitchen area. Elaborate woodwork is inside and out (dentilation, rope molding, fluted fireplace pilasters, paneling, chair rails, bow fat cupboards and outside window cornices and dentilation). The house remained in the Kellogg family until it was sold in 1913 to E. Welles Eddy, a distant relative. In 1928 the house was carefully renovated and a Colonial Revival addition containing an enlarged dining room, kitchen, sun room and more bedrooms was added. Various sheds were removed and a three bay garage was erected. In 1976 the Town of Newington purchased the house and farm for public use. West Meadow Cemetery is located on part of the former farm land. The Newington Historical Society & Trust, Inc. maintains its headquarters and several museum rooms containing Newington artifacts in the house which is now known as the Kellogg-Eddy House.
