A brief history of this little book may not be without interest to
those who i.' iay scan Its pages. In 1894 a list of the graves we decorate
appeared in the columns of T H E CONNECTICUT VALLEY ADVERTISER.
Soon after the question was asked, " Why not give the record of all East
Haddam men who were in the service?" At that time the work of com-piling
such a record appeared to be too great for the committee to attempt.
Two years after a movement to secure headstones for those who enlisted
from the town and died or were killed in the service was made, the records
were searched, every cemetery in the town was visited, and the plan aban-doned.
In 1898 a roll- call roster was used at our Memorial I > ay service.
The list was hastily prepared, largely from memory; therefore, very in-complete
and incorrect, calling forth much adverse criticism. It was then
decided to prepare a complete roster of all who enlisted from here, were
buried here, or who now reside in the town. Upon investigation it was
found that a number who enlisted from other towns were residents of East
Haddam, and they are included in this list. There are others who enlisted
in regiments of other States and in the United States marine corps or
navy whose record cannot be obtained. Where that is the case their names
do not appear in the roster. There are others whose history was received
from friends, but no data given. Other names are taken from headstones
and they are so noted. Of all men who served in Connecticut regiments
a true transcript is made from the official records of the State. The list of
the dead cannot be perfect, as only the names of those who are known to
have answered the last roll oall are given.
Part II. is not a history, but rather " a gathering around the camp-fire,"
and relates reminiscences of the days when we wore the blue. The
few incidents are written as told by comrade to comrade. Under the head
of " The Draft"— also of " Enlistment"— will be found the local home
work, told in the concise form of a military report. Every incident of
army life herein related is true, being a brief chapter from the lives of the
various parties who have contributed to this part of the work.
Now, kind reader, I crave your indulgence, and speak a word of my
own share in the work. I can lay no claim to being an author and less as
a compiler, this having been my first and only attempt at book making. I
have done my best to present to you in the most concise form possible the
records of East Haddam men who served in the War of the Rebellion. As
a veteran of that war and as a comrade of the Grand Army of the Repub-lic
I deem no task, no sacrifice, no effort, too great that may be of any
service to any comrade- in- arms, wore he the blue or the gray, or that may
tend to keep alive the memory of the eventful days of the Civil War.
My labor has been more of a mechanical nature than that of an au-thor.
I have simply put together the material as it has been placed in my
hands. Do not think that the labor has been a task, but rather a pleasure,
and if this little book proves to be of the least service to any person I am
more than paid for my share therein.
To COMRADE E. W. CHAFFEE and to all others who have assisted me
in the work I desire to tender my most sincere thanks for their kind favors;
and to you, kind reader, please receive this little book in the spirit of
Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty, for in such it is written.
Yours truly,
LEVI M. CHAPMAN,
MOODUS, CONN.

ADDENDUM.
To complete the record of East Haddam I now present that of one
who served under the Stars and Bars and wore the gray— DAVID ROSS.
He writes as follows: " Being a merchant of New Orleans at the com-mencement
of the Civil War, I was obliged to enlist as a Confederate sol-dier.
I enlisted with the commission of a first lieutenant at New Orleans
in the summer of ' 61, and was at Fort Jackson when it was bombarded by
the fleet of Commodore Farragut, April 16,' 62. The bombardment lasted
for seven days before the fleet passed the fort. Three days after we sur-rendered
to Commodore Porter, of the mortar fleet, and taken to New Or-leans,
where we were paroled by General Benjamin F. Butler. The cap-tain,
being wounded, I had command of the company at its surrender. At
that time our only rations were corn bread and molasses, with a very scant
allowance of bacon and coffee, flour selling at one hundred dollars a bar-rel.
My commission and sword are at the Russell Library, Middletown,
Conn., as relics of the Civil War."

Draft....
BY A TOWN OFFICIAL OF THE TIME.
President Lincoln's first call for troops was speedily answered by vol-unteers,
and East Haddam was one of the first towns of this State to
answer to that call; but later, although there was a continuous stream of
volunteers from East Haddam and other portions of the country, the calls
became so frequent and for such large numbers that drafts were ordered
on numerous occasions and for a long period of time.
East Haddam rose to the occasion, and our records show that meeting
after meeting was held for the purpose of voting money to pay not only
for volunteers, but for substitutes for those who were drafted. Taxes were
imposed, sometimes twice a year, to procure funds to pay such volunteers
and substitutes, and in a few instances over $ 1,000 each was paid for such
substitutes by our town.
One amusing incident occurred in this town regarding said drafts.
The drafts were drawn at New Haven, and it was usual for those liable to
a draft to be in that city on the days of drawing to learn their destiny.
One of the subjects, whom we will call Horace S. Smith, became quite
nervous as draft after draft was made. Finally a large call was issued— I
think for 500,000 men— and Smith was sorely perplexed; he felt that his
hour had surely come. His business prevented him from going to New
Haven, and he arranged with half a dozen of his friends who made the
trip to give him the earliest news of the draft. As those who went were
to arrive home about midnight, it was agreed, if Smith were so unfortu-nate
as to be drafted, that the messengers were to place a large stone on
the gate- post of his door- yard fence, but, if not drafted, there were to be
no such signal made.
Smith was not drafted, but the boys, out of pure cussedness, placed a
rock on his post. At early dawn his eye took in the signal and that stone
weighed down his heart until after mid- day, when he finally learned the
truth, and was once more able to relish his food and smile on the cruel
joke played on him.

] fun on tbe picket line.
We were on duty in the trenches in the front of Petersburg. Our
camp was in the second line of works, to the left and rear of Port Burn-ham
and near the celebrated " dug way." The first or front line was called
the picket line, and was less than sixty yards from the front works of the
enemy. There was always a full line of battle in the trench. By mutual
agreement there was no picket firing on this part of the line, and the
relief was made in the morning. The relief was by brigade, so that every
third day was spent in the trench. The turn of the Third Brigade came.
The morning was cold, with a raw wind and light rain. There was no
wood to be had, so we were without fires— cold, cross and ugly. About
noon the hail went over:
" Ho, Johnnie!"
" Hey, Yank!" came back.
" We are d cold; how are you? "
" If you're cold, go to h and warm. What you want?— some fun;
so lay low."
" All right. Look out!" and a ball whistled high over our heads and
was replied to in kind, as notice that we were ready.
Prom that on not a head could show over the breastworks without an
exchange of compliments." The cards were leaden ones, and sent as close
as possible from both sides. A little after dark there was a fearful thun-der
shower, the rain falling in torrents for nearly two hours, and the water
in the trench was knee- deep, what shelter we had being flooded.
After the rain some of the boys thought that when we had a good
thing we should share it with the officers and men in camp. Word was
sent along the line, arrangements made, the signal given, and every mus-ket
flashed as volley after volley was fired as only veterans can load and
fire. The artillery opened fire and we saw a grand display of fireworks—
the distant flash; the burning fuse, as it flies through the air; the screech-ing
shell, as it rises from the mortar and makes that grand curve in the
heavens, with its trail of fire. Who can tell of the grandeur of a night
cannonade ? The long roll is sounded, re- enforcements rush through the
" dug way," headed by the division commander and staff. By the time
they arrived at the trench everything was as calm as a summer's morn,
with every man at his post, and, strange as it was, no one knew why or
where the firing first began. The only explanation given was that in the
dark some one gave the alarm and every man began to fire without orders.
The re- enforcements and General C. returned to camp. The next morning,
in place of the relief, an order came from General C. stating that as the
Third Brigade had received so much enjoyment there, they could do an
extra turn of twenty- four hours' picket duty.

Hn East fmfcfcam ae a Volunteer Scout.
The Second Corps was in camp around Falmouth, Va., during the
winter of 1862-' 3. The battle of Fredericksburg had been fought and all
was quiet on the Eappahannock, when one evening at dress parade an
order from division headquarters was read calling for volunteers for a
scouting expedition within the rebel lines. There was no response; not a
man moved from the ranks. Parade was dismissed and the company dis-banded,
when two boys about seventeen years of age— Cy Webb, a drum-mer
of company D, and Cal Brown, of company G— met and agreed to go.
They called at headquarters and were ordered to report to General F.,
commanding the division. There we found sixteen others who had volun-teered
for the same duty and learned that the service required was to visit
a ford that crossed the Rapidan River a good eight miles from our camp,
cross it if we could, and ascertain the strength of the force guarding it.
Sergeant Imes, of a Delaware regiment, was placed in command of the
squad, which soon moved off. _ We then reported to an aide, who stood
near the General's tent, and he demanded to know why we did not go with
the squad, why we were not armed, and threatened to send us to the
guard house. He would not listen to any explanation. General F., hear-ing
the conversation, stepped to the door of his tent. Webb saluted and
appealed to him, saying that we were drummers and had no guns; that
we did not want to go with the squad, for they were sure to be captured;
we had heard the instructions given and that we would get the information
wanted, and asked for two revolvers. They were given to us, with a writ-ten
order to the officer of the picket, and we were off' as happy as a boy
free from school. Little we dreamed of what would befall us before our
return; had we known we would have been less gay and would have re-turned
to our quarters.
The distance was soon covered and we found that we were on the ex-treme
flank of the army. After nearly an hour's search we found Colonel
Gale, delivered our orders, and were escorted beyond the lines and nearly
to the river, where, with a kind word, our escort left us.
We crossed the stream about a mile below the ford, the water being
cold but not deep. We then went into the brush and held a council of
war. Our only plan was to stick together, no matter what happened.
After a good rest we started and found the road leading from the ford.
We did not see any picket fires, but could hear men moving, and we again
hid in the brush and waited. They proved to be Sergeant Imes and squad
and were taking no precautions whatever, but were marching in an easy, ,
careless manner and talking loudly. We resolved to watch them awhile,
remaining in the brush. They went but a short distance when a large
squad of the enemy filed into the road behind them— a trap had been set
and Imes and his men marched into it. From their front came the order:
'' Halt! Surrender! Throw down your guns!" Everyone of the squad

was captured without making an effort to escape. Taking the chances
ottered we crawled past them and were soon in sight of the rebel camp,
where we discovered a battery of artillery and a large force of infantry,
all protected by heavy breastworks. We made a careful survey of the
position and started for our linest but as we were above the ford we re-solved
to go direct to the river and cross. We again flank the pickets and
all is well. We saw a house about five hundred yards from us and visited
it, going to the smoke house and securing a fine ham. We also found a
guard, but he was asleep. The dogs heard us and barked. The guard
awakes and orders us to halt; then fires his musket, and there is a rush
from a picket post not far from the house.
Our only hope of escape was in the cover of a canebrake, all of a half
mile away and beyond an open field. Did we run? The bullets whistled
close, and at times seemingly cut the grass under our very feet. Away
went our ham and haversacks as we flew over that field and plunged into
the cane, landing in a ditch waist deep in mud and slime; but we are not
out of danger. The alarm was given and a searching party ordered out.
Into the cane and through the mud we wade until we find a place to hide.
It was now daybreak and we knew that we could not leave our hiding
place until night. We finally found a place where the ground was hard,
and there we lay through the longest day that ever was— to us; it seemed
a week before the sun turned upon its downward course. To add to our
discomfort we had a very heavy shower, soaking not only us, but the thick
leaves of the cane, which soon froze, cutting our hands like knives when-ever
we touched them. Night came on and we soon realized that we were
surrounded by a perfect line of sentries on each side of the brake. There
appeared to be no escape unless we followed the cane, which we did, often
being compelled to crawl on our hands and knees through the cane, brush
and briers.
We reached the river near daylight the next morning. There was no
time to find a crossing, so into the ice- cold water we plunged, finding it
chin deep. As we climbed the bank we came face to face with our pickets
and were soon before a roaring fire. Here we were placed under arrest
and informed that we would be compelled to await the relief before we
could go to camp, the officer of the post refusing to believe our story.
And well he might, for two more pitiful objects would be hard to unearth.
Our hands and faces were scratched and covered with blood, our clothing
was in shreds and covered with mud. and we were so weak from our long
fast and the cold that we could scarcely move. The relief came about
noon, and we were escorted to division headquarters and turned over to
the Provost Marshal as two deserters. In a very short time we were or-dered
to report to General F., to whom we related our adventures, drawing
a rough plan of the rebel works, and were released, with instructions to
proceed to the quarters of the guard, where we were supplied with new
clothing, a good square meal of hot soup, and coffee. Near dark that
evening two weary, worn- out, but much wiser boys reported to their regi-ment,
cured of skylarking as volunteer scouts.

Enlistments.
There was no assignment made by the State of the number of men
required from the different towns. Under the first call for 75,000 volun-teers,
for three months, the records show that East Haddam furnished its
full share. There was no bounty paid for men under that call or under
the first call for 300,000 men for three years, as more men offered them-selves
than could be used. The first bounty voted by the town was at a
special meeting held July 31,1862, when it was voted to pay the sum of
$ 100 to each and every man who should enlist and be accepted before the
20th day of August of that year.
The call of July, 1862, for 300,000 men for three years, or during the
war, was followed by a call for 300,000 men for nine months, there being
but about twenty days between the dates of the two calls. Enlistments at
this time were made but slowly. The number required was about eighty.
To secure the quota of the town a town meeting was called for September
6, whereat it was voted to increase the bounty $ 75 and to pay the sum of
$ 175 to all who enlisted for nine months. At this town meeting there was
a committee appointed to ascertain the total number of men who had en-listed
from the town. The report is not on record as to the number of
enlistments, but to October 1, 1862, the enlistments from the town exceed-ed
the number required. At this town meeting ( October, 1862) it was
voted to increase the bounty $ 25, paying $ 200 for each enlistment. This
meeting was the last for the year.
To meet the calls of the spring and summer of 1863 it was found
necessary to resort to the draft, and we find that on July 13,1863, the town
voted to pay to each able- bodied man who should be drafted the sum of
$ 300. At a town meeting held July 27 the above vote was rescinded and
$ 12,000 were appropriated to secure substitutes for all drafted men, and a
committee of three was appointed to expend the same.
On August 13 that sum of $ 12,000 was increased by an appropriation
of $ 8,000. It appears that this plan did not work as well as expected, for
at a town meeting held December 20 a special agent was appointed to ob-tain
volunteers and substitutes, and an appropriation of $ 500 was made for
his expenses and $ 3,500 placed at his command. General Grant was now
in command of the armies, and a supreme effort was to be made to crush
the rebellion. It required men, and President Lincoln called for 500,000
men. The number assigned for East Haddam to furnish was sixty- five.
At a town meeting held June 16,1864, the special agent was continued
and $ 500 set aside for his expenses, no limit being placed as to the amount
that he should expend. The town's quota was to be filled regardless of
expense; men were not plenty and enlistments were very slow. There-fore,
at a town meeting held on August 6, it was voted to pay a bounty to
each and every man who should volunteer or was drafted of $ 300, pro-
THE EAST HADDAM VOLUNTEER. 33
vided he was accredited to East Haddam, and a committee of three was
appointed to borrow the money required to pay said bounty.
The last town meeting for war purposes was held December 7,1864,
and the only business transacted that we will note was to continue the
bounty of $ 300.
The total amount expended by the town for bounties to volunteers, for
securing substitutes for drafted men, and the expense connected therewith
cannot be ascertained at the present time, but from July, 1862, when the
first bounty was paid, until April, 1865, the date of the order from the
War Department to stop enlistments, the sum was not less than $ 80,000,
exclusive of the indirect expense, which could be no small item, for, to
the honor of the town, it can be said that no soldier's family suffered for
the want of any of the necessaries of life while he was at the front fight-ing
for his country.

Gbe Wfcette.
Deep and silent flowed the waters of the Appomattox. The eddy
caused by the little brook as its waters joined those of the river shows
not a ripple, yet what tragedies that silent place hide from the eye of man
are known only to the Great Unseen and Jlis Recording Angel. The
extreme right of the Union breastworks in front of Petersburg, Va.— the
high bank covered with a jangied growth of mountain laurel, with a nar-row
path at the water's edge— was the spot most dreaded by every soldier
of the Army of the Potomac,
To prevent any crossing of the river between the lines at night there
was a sentry, or vidette, placed some Ave hundred yards down the stream,
or to the right of the works, and there many a brave and gallant man per-formed
his last duty, and ever after his name was carried on the rolls of
his company as " missing on picket."
In the early months of the year 1865 the Second Corps held the right
of the line for a few days, and nearly every relief of the pickets reported
the loss of one or more men. Some were found dead upon vidette post
and others were missing, the extreme or outer post being the one of the
most danger. The writer's regiment relieved the th New York; they
reported one killed and found on post, with the outer post vacant or miss-ing.
In the forming of the relief the writer was an extra man, but when
the videttes were posted for the night one man was considered unsuitable
for the position and the narrator was placed at the outer post, going on at
2 o'clock in the morning and being relieved at 4.
The night was dark and cloudy but very still, and the rippling waters
seemed to sing of home and the loved ones far away. Surely, the soldier's
thoughts were there. But hark! what is that sound? Some one creeping,
or is it an animal? Home and loved ones are forgotten; every nerve is at
its utmost tension. The vidette hears again the sound; this time a low
hiss, as if to caution another. He dare not call for help; he must not give
a false alarm; he has but to wait— he knows not for what. The sound
comes nearer; the sentry moves to where he has the protection of a clump
of laurel, and there, with gun at a " ready," he awaits them. He hears a
whisper, but can see no one. Now a loosened stone rolls down the bank
and drops into the water below. They are crawling upon him; how many
he knows not. Will they make a rush to capture him or to throw him
over the bank into the riter? Oh! how long will this thing last? He
feels his strength giving way to the terrible nervous strain. At last he
can bear the suspense no longer. His linger is on the trigger of his gun to
give the alarm when he is hailed in a hoarse whisper:
" Yank," don't shoot; but let us come in— we are deserters. Speak
low, or our pickets over the river will fire on us."
THE EAST HADDAM VOLUNTEER. 35
" How many are there ? "
" Three."
" Are you armed?"
" No."
" Then hands up and advance as you are called."
At the same time the call, loud and clear, rang out upon the night air:
" Officer of the Post, with men, come quick; outer vidette."
A commissioned officer and six men are soon at the post; the sentry
tells his story, sinking exhausted to the ground, and is carried to the post.
Truly, the suspense or nervous strain of that hour was more than he could
endure. At the post he soon recovered; but never will he forget the hours
spent on duty as a vidette.

THE CONNECTICUT VALLEY ADVERTISER PRINT, 1899. i m ,£\ 5 CL+ ¥ 0 THE} fUBLIC. A brief history of this little book may not be without interest to those who i.' iay scan Its pages. In 1894 a list of the graves we decorate appeared in the columns of T H E CONNECTICUT VALLEY ADVERTISER. Soon after the question was asked, " Why not give the record of all East Haddam men who were in the service?" At that time the work of com-piling such a record appeared to be too great for the committee to attempt. Two years after a movement to secure headstones for those who enlisted from the town and died or were killed in the service was made, the records were searched, every cemetery in the town was visited, and the plan aban-doned. In 1898 a roll- call roster was used at our Memorial I > ay service. The list was hastily prepared, largely from memory; therefore, very in-complete and incorrect, calling forth much adverse criticism. It was then decided to prepare a complete roster of all who enlisted from here, were buried here, or who now reside in the town. Upon investigation it was found that a number who enlisted from other towns were residents of East Haddam, and they are included in this list. There are others who enlisted in regiments of other States and in the United States marine corps or navy whose record cannot be obtained. Where that is the case their names do not appear in the roster. There are others whose history was received from friends, but no data given. Other names are taken from headstones and they are so noted. Of all men who served in Connecticut regiments a true transcript is made from the official records of the State. The list of the dead cannot be perfect, as only the names of those who are known to have answered the last roll oall are given. Part II. is not a history, but rather " a gathering around the camp-fire" and relates reminiscences of the days when we wore the blue. The few incidents are written as told by comrade to comrade. Under the head of " The Draft"— also of " Enlistment"— will be found the local home work, told in the concise form of a military report. Every incident of army life herein related is true, being a brief chapter from the lives of the various parties who have contributed to this part of the work. Now, kind reader, I crave your indulgence, and speak a word of my own share in the work. I can lay no claim to being an author and less as a compiler, this having been my first and only attempt at book making. I have done my best to present to you in the most concise form possible the records of East Haddam men who served in the War of the Rebellion. As a veteran of that war and as a comrade of the Grand Army of the Repub-lic I deem no task, no sacrifice, no effort, too great that may be of any service to any comrade- in- arms, wore he the blue or the gray, or that may tend to keep alive the memory of the eventful days of the Civil War. My labor has been more of a mechanical nature than that of an au-thor. I have simply put together the material as it has been placed in my hands. Do not think that the labor has been a task, but rather a pleasure, and if this little book proves to be of the least service to any person I am more than paid for my share therein. To COMRADE E. W. CHAFFEE and to all others who have assisted me in the work I desire to tender my most sincere thanks for their kind favors; and to you, kind reader, please receive this little book in the spirit of Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty, for in such it is written. Yours truly, LEVI M. CHAPMAN, MOODUS, CONN. Hist of Volunteers in tbe " Rebellion. Wright, Charles M. Wright, James W. ADDENDUM. To complete the record of East Haddam I now present that of one who served under the Stars and Bars and wore the gray— DAVID ROSS. He writes as follows: " Being a merchant of New Orleans at the com-mencement of the Civil War, I was obliged to enlist as a Confederate sol-dier. I enlisted with the commission of a first lieutenant at New Orleans in the summer of ' 61, and was at Fort Jackson when it was bombarded by the fleet of Commodore Farragut, April 16,' 62. The bombardment lasted for seven days before the fleet passed the fort. Three days after we sur-rendered to Commodore Porter, of the mortar fleet, and taken to New Or-leans, where we were paroled by General Benjamin F. Butler. The cap-tain, being wounded, I had command of the company at its surrender. At that time our only rations were corn bread and molasses, with a very scant allowance of bacon and coffee, flour selling at one hundred dollars a bar-rel. My commission and sword are at the Russell Library, Middletown, Conn., as relics of the Civil War." 28 THE EAST HADDAM VOLUNTEER. I Draft.... BY A TOWN OFFICIAL OF THE TIME. President Lincoln's first call for troops was speedily answered by vol-unteers, and East Haddam was one of the first towns of this State to answer to that call; but later, although there was a continuous stream of volunteers from East Haddam and other portions of the country, the calls became so frequent and for such large numbers that drafts were ordered on numerous occasions and for a long period of time. East Haddam rose to the occasion, and our records show that meeting after meeting was held for the purpose of voting money to pay not only for volunteers, but for substitutes for those who were drafted. Taxes were imposed, sometimes twice a year, to procure funds to pay such volunteers and substitutes, and in a few instances over $ 1,000 each was paid for such substitutes by our town. One amusing incident occurred in this town regarding said drafts. The drafts were drawn at New Haven, and it was usual for those liable to a draft to be in that city on the days of drawing to learn their destiny. One of the subjects, whom we will call Horace S. Smith, became quite nervous as draft after draft was made. Finally a large call was issued— I think for 500,000 men— and Smith was sorely perplexed; he felt that his hour had surely come. His business prevented him from going to New Haven, and he arranged with half a dozen of his friends who made the trip to give him the earliest news of the draft. As those who went were to arrive home about midnight, it was agreed, if Smith were so unfortu-nate as to be drafted, that the messengers were to place a large stone on the gate- post of his door- yard fence, but, if not drafted, there were to be no such signal made. Smith was not drafted, but the boys, out of pure cussedness, placed a rock on his post. At early dawn his eye took in the signal and that stone weighed down his heart until after mid- day, when he finally learned the truth, and was once more able to relish his food and smile on the cruel joke played on him. i 29 THE EAST HADDAM VOLUNTEER. ] fun on tbe picket line. We were on duty in the trenches in the front of Petersburg. Our camp was in the second line of works, to the left and rear of Port Burn-ham and near the celebrated " dug way." The first or front line was called the picket line, and was less than sixty yards from the front works of the enemy. There was always a full line of battle in the trench. By mutual agreement there was no picket firing on this part of the line, and the relief was made in the morning. The relief was by brigade, so that every third day was spent in the trench. The turn of the Third Brigade came. The morning was cold, with a raw wind and light rain. There was no wood to be had, so we were without fires— cold, cross and ugly. About noon the hail went over: " Ho, Johnnie!" " Hey, Yank!" came back. " We are d cold; how are you? " " If you're cold, go to h and warm. What you want?— some fun; so lay low." " All right. Look out!" and a ball whistled high over our heads and was replied to in kind, as notice that we were ready. Prom that on not a head could show over the breastworks without an exchange of compliments." The cards were leaden ones, and sent as close as possible from both sides. A little after dark there was a fearful thun-der shower, the rain falling in torrents for nearly two hours, and the water in the trench was knee- deep, what shelter we had being flooded. After the rain some of the boys thought that when we had a good thing we should share it with the officers and men in camp. Word was sent along the line, arrangements made, the signal given, and every mus-ket flashed as volley after volley was fired as only veterans can load and fire. The artillery opened fire and we saw a grand display of fireworks— the distant flash; the burning fuse, as it flies through the air; the screech-ing shell, as it rises from the mortar and makes that grand curve in the heavens, with its trail of fire. Who can tell of the grandeur of a night cannonade ? The long roll is sounded, re- enforcements rush through the " dug way" headed by the division commander and staff. By the time they arrived at the trench everything was as calm as a summer's morn, with every man at his post, and, strange as it was, no one knew why or where the firing first began. The only explanation given was that in the dark some one gave the alarm and every man began to fire without orders. The re- enforcements and General C. returned to camp. The next morning, in place of the relief, an order came from General C. stating that as the Third Brigade had received so much enjoyment there, they could do an extra turn of twenty- four hours' picket duty. 30 THE EAST HADDAM VOLUNTEER. Hn East fmfcfcam ae a Volunteer Scout. The Second Corps was in camp around Falmouth, Va., during the winter of 1862-' 3. The battle of Fredericksburg had been fought and all was quiet on the Eappahannock, when one evening at dress parade an order from division headquarters was read calling for volunteers for a scouting expedition within the rebel lines. There was no response; not a man moved from the ranks. Parade was dismissed and the company dis-banded, when two boys about seventeen years of age— Cy Webb, a drum-mer of company D, and Cal Brown, of company G— met and agreed to go. They called at headquarters and were ordered to report to General F., commanding the division. There we found sixteen others who had volun-teered for the same duty and learned that the service required was to visit a ford that crossed the Rapidan River a good eight miles from our camp, cross it if we could, and ascertain the strength of the force guarding it. Sergeant Imes, of a Delaware regiment, was placed in command of the squad, which soon moved off. _ We then reported to an aide, who stood near the General's tent, and he demanded to know why we did not go with the squad, why we were not armed, and threatened to send us to the guard house. He would not listen to any explanation. General F., hear-ing the conversation, stepped to the door of his tent. Webb saluted and appealed to him, saying that we were drummers and had no guns; that we did not want to go with the squad, for they were sure to be captured; we had heard the instructions given and that we would get the information wanted, and asked for two revolvers. They were given to us, with a writ-ten order to the officer of the picket, and we were off' as happy as a boy free from school. Little we dreamed of what would befall us before our return; had we known we would have been less gay and would have re-turned to our quarters. The distance was soon covered and we found that we were on the ex-treme flank of the army. After nearly an hour's search we found Colonel Gale, delivered our orders, and were escorted beyond the lines and nearly to the river, where, with a kind word, our escort left us. We crossed the stream about a mile below the ford, the water being cold but not deep. We then went into the brush and held a council of war. Our only plan was to stick together, no matter what happened. After a good rest we started and found the road leading from the ford. We did not see any picket fires, but could hear men moving, and we again hid in the brush and waited. They proved to be Sergeant Imes and squad and were taking no precautions whatever, but were marching in an easy, , careless manner and talking loudly. We resolved to watch them awhile, remaining in the brush. They went but a short distance when a large squad of the enemy filed into the road behind them— a trap had been set and Imes and his men marched into it. From their front came the order: '' Halt! Surrender! Throw down your guns!" Everyone of the squad 31 THE EAST HADDAM VOLUNTEER. was captured without making an effort to escape. Taking the chances ottered we crawled past them and were soon in sight of the rebel camp, where we discovered a battery of artillery and a large force of infantry, all protected by heavy breastworks. We made a careful survey of the position and started for our linest but as we were above the ford we re-solved to go direct to the river and cross. We again flank the pickets and all is well. We saw a house about five hundred yards from us and visited it, going to the smoke house and securing a fine ham. We also found a guard, but he was asleep. The dogs heard us and barked. The guard awakes and orders us to halt; then fires his musket, and there is a rush from a picket post not far from the house. Our only hope of escape was in the cover of a canebrake, all of a half mile away and beyond an open field. Did we run? The bullets whistled close, and at times seemingly cut the grass under our very feet. Away went our ham and haversacks as we flew over that field and plunged into the cane, landing in a ditch waist deep in mud and slime; but we are not out of danger. The alarm was given and a searching party ordered out. Into the cane and through the mud we wade until we find a place to hide. It was now daybreak and we knew that we could not leave our hiding place until night. We finally found a place where the ground was hard, and there we lay through the longest day that ever was— to us; it seemed a week before the sun turned upon its downward course. To add to our discomfort we had a very heavy shower, soaking not only us, but the thick leaves of the cane, which soon froze, cutting our hands like knives when-ever we touched them. Night came on and we soon realized that we were surrounded by a perfect line of sentries on each side of the brake. There appeared to be no escape unless we followed the cane, which we did, often being compelled to crawl on our hands and knees through the cane, brush and briers. We reached the river near daylight the next morning. There was no time to find a crossing, so into the ice- cold water we plunged, finding it chin deep. As we climbed the bank we came face to face with our pickets and were soon before a roaring fire. Here we were placed under arrest and informed that we would be compelled to await the relief before we could go to camp, the officer of the post refusing to believe our story. And well he might, for two more pitiful objects would be hard to unearth. Our hands and faces were scratched and covered with blood, our clothing was in shreds and covered with mud. and we were so weak from our long fast and the cold that we could scarcely move. The relief came about noon, and we were escorted to division headquarters and turned over to the Provost Marshal as two deserters. In a very short time we were or-dered to report to General F., to whom we related our adventures, drawing a rough plan of the rebel works, and were released, with instructions to proceed to the quarters of the guard, where we were supplied with new clothing, a good square meal of hot soup, and coffee. Near dark that evening two weary, worn- out, but much wiser boys reported to their regi-ment, cured of skylarking as volunteer scouts. 32 THE EAST HADDAM VOLUNTEER. Enlistments. There was no assignment made by the State of the number of men required from the different towns. Under the first call for 75,000 volun-teers, for three months, the records show that East Haddam furnished its full share. There was no bounty paid for men under that call or under the first call for 300,000 men for three years, as more men offered them-selves than could be used. The first bounty voted by the town was at a special meeting held July 31,1862, when it was voted to pay the sum of $ 100 to each and every man who should enlist and be accepted before the 20th day of August of that year. The call of July, 1862, for 300,000 men for three years, or during the war, was followed by a call for 300,000 men for nine months, there being but about twenty days between the dates of the two calls. Enlistments at this time were made but slowly. The number required was about eighty. To secure the quota of the town a town meeting was called for September 6, whereat it was voted to increase the bounty $ 75 and to pay the sum of $ 175 to all who enlisted for nine months. At this town meeting there was a committee appointed to ascertain the total number of men who had en-listed from the town. The report is not on record as to the number of enlistments, but to October 1, 1862, the enlistments from the town exceed-ed the number required. At this town meeting ( October, 1862) it was voted to increase the bounty $ 25, paying $ 200 for each enlistment. This meeting was the last for the year. To meet the calls of the spring and summer of 1863 it was found necessary to resort to the draft, and we find that on July 13,1863, the town voted to pay to each able- bodied man who should be drafted the sum of $ 300. At a town meeting held July 27 the above vote was rescinded and $ 12,000 were appropriated to secure substitutes for all drafted men, and a committee of three was appointed to expend the same. On August 13 that sum of $ 12,000 was increased by an appropriation of $ 8,000. It appears that this plan did not work as well as expected, for at a town meeting held December 20 a special agent was appointed to ob-tain volunteers and substitutes, and an appropriation of $ 500 was made for his expenses and $ 3,500 placed at his command. General Grant was now in command of the armies, and a supreme effort was to be made to crush the rebellion. It required men, and President Lincoln called for 500,000 men. The number assigned for East Haddam to furnish was sixty- five. At a town meeting held June 16,1864, the special agent was continued and $ 500 set aside for his expenses, no limit being placed as to the amount that he should expend. The town's quota was to be filled regardless of expense; men were not plenty and enlistments were very slow. There-fore, at a town meeting held on August 6, it was voted to pay a bounty to each and every man who should volunteer or was drafted of $ 300, pro- THE EAST HADDAM VOLUNTEER. 33 vided he was accredited to East Haddam, and a committee of three was appointed to borrow the money required to pay said bounty. The last town meeting for war purposes was held December 7,1864, and the only business transacted that we will note was to continue the bounty of $ 300. The total amount expended by the town for bounties to volunteers, for securing substitutes for drafted men, and the expense connected therewith cannot be ascertained at the present time, but from July, 1862, when the first bounty was paid, until April, 1865, the date of the order from the War Department to stop enlistments, the sum was not less than $ 80,000, exclusive of the indirect expense, which could be no small item, for, to the honor of the town, it can be said that no soldier's family suffered for the want of any of the necessaries of life while he was at the front fight-ing for his country. / 34 THE EAST HADDAM VOLUNTEER. Gbe Wfcette. Deep and silent flowed the waters of the Appomattox. The eddy caused by the little brook as its waters joined those of the river shows not a ripple, yet what tragedies that silent place hide from the eye of man are known only to the Great Unseen and Jlis Recording Angel. The extreme right of the Union breastworks in front of Petersburg, Va.— the high bank covered with a jangied growth of mountain laurel, with a nar-row path at the water's edge— was the spot most dreaded by every soldier of the Army of the Potomac, To prevent any crossing of the river between the lines at night there was a sentry, or vidette, placed some Ave hundred yards down the stream, or to the right of the works, and there many a brave and gallant man per-formed his last duty, and ever after his name was carried on the rolls of his company as " missing on picket." In the early months of the year 1865 the Second Corps held the right of the line for a few days, and nearly every relief of the pickets reported the loss of one or more men. Some were found dead upon vidette post and others were missing, the extreme or outer post being the one of the most danger. The writer's regiment relieved the th New York; they reported one killed and found on post, with the outer post vacant or miss-ing. In the forming of the relief the writer was an extra man, but when the videttes were posted for the night one man was considered unsuitable for the position and the narrator was placed at the outer post, going on at 2 o'clock in the morning and being relieved at 4. The night was dark and cloudy but very still, and the rippling waters seemed to sing of home and the loved ones far away. Surely, the soldier's thoughts were there. But hark! what is that sound? Some one creeping, or is it an animal? Home and loved ones are forgotten; every nerve is at its utmost tension. The vidette hears again the sound; this time a low hiss, as if to caution another. He dare not call for help; he must not give a false alarm; he has but to wait— he knows not for what. The sound comes nearer; the sentry moves to where he has the protection of a clump of laurel, and there, with gun at a " ready" he awaits them. He hears a whisper, but can see no one. Now a loosened stone rolls down the bank and drops into the water below. They are crawling upon him; how many he knows not. Will they make a rush to capture him or to throw him over the bank into the riter? Oh! how long will this thing last? He feels his strength giving way to the terrible nervous strain. At last he can bear the suspense no longer. His linger is on the trigger of his gun to give the alarm when he is hailed in a hoarse whisper: " Yank" don't shoot; but let us come in— we are deserters. Speak low, or our pickets over the river will fire on us." THE EAST HADDAM VOLUNTEER. 35 " How many are there ? " " Three." " Are you armed?" " No." " Then hands up and advance as you are called." At the same time the call, loud and clear, rang out upon the night air: " Officer of the Post, with men, come quick; outer vidette." A commissioned officer and six men are soon at the post; the sentry tells his story, sinking exhausted to the ground, and is carried to the post. Truly, the suspense or nervous strain of that hour was more than he could endure. At the post he soon recovered; but never will he forget the hours spent on duty as a vidette.
