fact
that the
cornice
on the
old
Elwood
house
on
Sherwood
Island
,
built

1787
, was
apparently
copied
from that of the "
Banks
House
on
Greenfield
Hill.
"
Concerning
the
Elwood
House
cornice
it
says
-
"
It
is
beautiful
,
delicate
and
unusual
cornice
, and
is
noteworthy
that
it
appears
on
so
many
examples
in the
town
of
Westport
and
is
found
elsewhere
on a
very
few
houses
only.
"
Porch
-
leanto
type
over
gable
end
door
and
over
side
door
to the
south
.
Both
are
attractive
with
old
lattice
work
of an
unusual
pattern
. A
leanto
porch
at the
back
also has
fancy
lattice
work
. The
porch
on the
main
house
has a
recessed
corner
portico
with
tall
thick
round
columns
. An
old
paneled
door
opens
on this
porch
from the
old
part
of the
house
.
Chimney
in
old
ell
to the
north
.
Doorway
Sunken
paneled
door
with a
plain
frame
with
visor
above
. The
south
door
at the
side
has
one
large
sunken
panel
and
four-pane
sidelights
.
History
The
Bradley
family
,
Barzilla
Banks
,
Georgia
and
Mary
Banks
have been
early
owners
. The
Banks
family
occupied
the
house
for
many
years
in its
original
condition
before
it
was
purchased
by the
Parish-Watsons
,
who
restored
it
about
1933
.
