Condition - Physical
Good
Authenticity
Original
, with
some
additions
Exterior
It
is
a
square
house
with a
high
hip
roof
,
surrounded
by a
neat
lawn
and an
attractive
fence
with
delicately
turned
pickets
. The
main
cornice
has
brackets
.
Doorway
The
entrance
trim
is
severe
and of
good
design
. A
well
designed
porch
with
slender
columns
and
Ionic
caps
support
a
copper
roof
. This
addition
,
which
is
on the
south
side
,
appears
to have been
added
later
.
Interior
Hall
-
central
with
straight
stair
on
right
.
Small
round
rail
, with
thin
oblong-shaped
balusters
.
Applied
triangular
ornament
under
treads
.
Hall
has
wainscot
of
sunk
paneling
, and
five
extremely
handsome
doorways
,
all
with "
ears
" an
ornament
of
interwoven
circles
, and
dentil
courses
. The
second
door
on the
south
side
,
however
,
is
large
, has
no
course
of
circles
, and
leads
nowhere
. In
fact
, the
door
,
which
is
of
flush
paneling
,
is
not a
door
, but
nailed
in
place
. If
it
opened
,
it
would be
upon
the
wall
between
two
rooms
.
It
is
opposite
the
fireplace
in the
drawing
room
on the
north
side
, but
no
one
thinks
that the
wall
between
the
hall
and
drawing
room
has not
always
been there,
even
though
the
stair
and the
fireplace
may
seem
later
. Its
existence
has
never
been
explained
.
It
seems
purely
ornamental
, but
is
not
centered
between
the
other
two
doors
, from
which
it
differs
.
Drawing
room
once
two
rooms
,
now
one
,
extends
along
the
north
side
. A
fireplace
juts
out
on the
north
wall
with a
finely
carved
Adam
mantel
, on
tapering
pilasters
.
Directly
opposite
is
a
plain
post
-
absolutely
plain
, and
obviously
later
. The
outer
wall
space
is
covered
with
shelves
of
books
and
windows
.
Parlor
(southeast)
has
same
sunk
panel
wainscot
as
hall
, and
very
elaborate
fireplace
wall
end
and
doorways
(described
in
hall)
.
Doors
have
six
panels
.
Interlaced
rope
mouldings
,
modillions
and
brackets
.
History
Carving
said
to have been
done
by
Hessian
prisoners
.
William
Spratt
may
have been the
architect
.
