Probable
that the

originally
extended
across
the
entire

the

Evidences
(one
of
which
is
the
existence
of
two
old
stairs)
point
that this
building
has
always
had been
used
as a
duplex
house
. In
room
"A"
(see
sketch)
on
first
floor
, there are
evidences
that the
existing
wall
paper
covers
some
old
wood
finished
walls
. This
suggests
the
theory
that the
alterations
of
1880
were in
part
constructed
above
an
old
room
in what was then a
leanto
. The
building
sets
well
back
from the
street
.
Interior
Stairs
-
closed

rather
short

turned
balusters
,
square
posts
,
moulded

. There are
still
parts
of the
original
stairs
.
Only
dog-legged
stairs

Connecticut
(1725?)
. Also
some
old
fireplaces
and
mantels
. There
is
some
of the
original
wood
work
in the
leanto
,
which
has
recently
been
carefully
restored
under
direction
of

History
After
1754
this
building
became
the
home
of
Captain
Stephen
and
Freelove
Baldwin
Stow
,
(until
her
death
in
1804)
.
It
is
an
extremely
interesting
house
,
built
,
no
doubt
, in
three
or
more
operations
. The
western
end
,
including
the
leanto
,
is
probably
the
oldest
portion
. There
is
some
question
as to
whether
the
west
end
of the
main
house
or the
adjacent
leanto
was
constructed
first
. There
is
probability
that the
west
end
of the
leanto
was the
first
to be
built
because
of the
placement
of the
chimney
between
the
house
and the
leanto
, with the
fireplace
opening
into the
leanto
.

diagram.)
