Ionic
columns
with
fluted
Ionic
pilasters
at the
corners
support
a
rather
wide
entablature
. The
columns
rest
on the
protruding
stone
foundation
. There
is
a
peaked
pediment
in the
center
of
front
roof
. The
pediment
projects
out
towards
the
front
slightly
. The
cornice
runs
across
the
gable
end
and the
cornice
has
brackets
all
around
. The
underpinning
is
quite
high
, and
affords
roomy
space
in the
basement
. A
similar
fanlight
to the
one
on
front
is
also on the
gable
end
. The
design
of the
house
is
attributed
to
David
Hoadley
of
New
Haven
.
Doorway
Leaded
sidelights
and
fanlight
at the
Dutch
,
raised
panel
door
. The
door
is
not
now
used
; an
iron
balcony
surrounds
the
entrance
.
Originally
there were
staight
wooden
stairs
, but
changes
to the
street
level
made
a
bulkwark
necessary
and
stone
steps
were
put
in to
lead
down
to the
basement
,
which
is
now
the
main
entrance
.
Interior
Changed
for
store
use

Entrance
now
through
basement
,
which
is
changed
.
Upstairs
is
little
changed
except
by
addition
of
stair
to
third
floor
from
second
.
Vestibule
created
in
front
hall
by a
new
partition
with
sidelights
.
Northwest
room
-
has the
most
elaborate
mantel
, with
two
narrow
pilasters
,
fluted
, on
pedestals
raised
off
the
base
on
little
feet
. The
entablature
is
flanked
by
two
shorter
ones
.
Boldly
projecting
mantel
.
Northeast
room
-
has
heavier
fluted
columns
, a
very
high
and
rather
high
entablature
and
box
ornamented
with
carving
.
Stair
-
recessed
at
right
of
hall
,
comes
down
in a
graceful
curve
,
simpler
than the
Bradley
curve
.
One
helix
.
Round
mahogany
rail
,
square
dark
spindles
,
small
applied
moulding
under
treads
.
Upper
northwest
room
-
very
elegant
sunburst
mantel
;
large
one
in
box
with
undercut
carving
.
Erect
sunbursts
over
pilasters
.
Web
carving
on
edge
of
shelf

Upper
northeast
room
-
simpler
mantel
with
applied
bow
designs
replacing
the
sunbursts
. The
right
hand
stair
up
from the
basement
is
from
Eli
Whitney's
old
house
on the
corner
above

. Has an
ivory
"
peace
block
" in
newel
.
