small
gambrel
roofed
house
of
stone
presents
a
quaint
,
old
appearance
. The
roof
is
very
flat
and
gives
the
house
an
appearance
of
lowness
across
the
ends
. The
roof
is
of
red
tar
or
composition
paper
.
Roof
line
of
two
small
dormers
follows
the
pitch
of the
peak
.

century
moulding
over
box
cornice

History
Joseph
Truman
,
Jr.
, was
building
the
house
when
he
died
in
1745
.
Apparently
the
east
part
was not
complete
.
It
was
bought
by
Nathaniel
Hempstead
,
1774
, in a
half
finished
condition
. The
tradition
of its
being
built
in
1751
by
Huguenot
expatriates
came
from
Mrs
Branch
. At the
present
time
the
house
is
operated
as a
tea
room
.
