Condition - Physical
Excellent
Exterior
The
house
is
set
on a
knoll
overlooking
the
river
, but
facing
east
on a
dirt
road
which
forks
up
the
hill
to
Creek
Row
.
It
was
designed
by
Wm
.
Spratt
, the
British
army
officer
who
had
just
finished
a
house
for
Cha,pion's
[sic]
cousin
,
Julius
Deming
, in
Litchfield
. In this
house
he
abandons
his
characteristic
facade
of a
projecting
pediment
, and
still
adapting
the
square
,
hip
roofed
type
of
house
,
uses
a
closed
pediment
portico
reminiscent
of that on the
house
of
Cha,pion's
[sic]
father
,
Gen
.
Henry
Cha,pion
[sic]
of
Westchester
(which
may
possibly
have been
designed
by
Spratt
,
too
-
1790)
. The
narrow
country
road
on
which
the
house
faces
would not
justify
a
pretentious
front
. The
real
front
-
though
not
architecturally
-
is
the
piazzas
around
the
ell
,
facing
the
river
and the
gardens
. These have been
broadened
, in this
generation
, in the
direction
of the
river
.
Subsidiary
fronts
face
the
north
-
with a
service
entrance
stately
enough
for the
main
entrance
of
mort
houses
; and the
much
admired
garden
front
to the
south
. This has a
closed
pediment
porch
in a
five
window
front
, on a
narrow
terrace
overlooking
the
three
garden
levels
below
. The
canopy
is
supported
on
fluted
Ionic
columns
, and has
full
entablature
and
dentils
. The
window
heads
are also
treated
with
full
detail
, and the
cornice
has a
small
dentil
course
,
medallions
, and
ballustrade
. An
ell
on the
northwest
corner
extends
to the
rear
,
allowing
a
half
enclosed
porch
at the
southwest
side
of the
house
. This was
extended
by a
narrow
porch
,
now
widened
around
the
back
,
affording
views
up
and
down
the
river
,
through
the
tops
of the
higher
trees
. A
double
privy
,
down
a
hedged
walk
, on a
lower
terrace
,
carries
the
full
architectural
detail
of the
house
.
Doorway
Flush
paneled
central
door
;
water
gilt
knocker
of
cast
iron
in an
Adam
design
of a
Medusa
head
.
Interior
The
central
hall
runs
two
thirds
through
the
house
,
without
a
stair
. This
rises
,
enclosed
, from the
rear
of the
southwest
room
,
toward
the
front
. The
four
famin
[sic]
rooms
are
all
paneled
, and
spend
upon
the
lavish
development
of the
fireplace
and
mantels
the
decorative
energy
which
most
earlier
houses
had
concentrated
on the
stair
.
It
is
noteworthy
that not a
sign
of
sunk
paneling
exists
in the
house
. The
two
front
rooms
are
identical
, with
ceilings
almost
9
'
high
.
